Knight Batten awards 2011: Guardian Data among those honoured

The Guardian Datastore has won a prize at the Knight Batten awards for innovation in journalism, the first British entry ever to be honoured at all at the awards

The big winner at the awards was the fantastic Storify, with special distinctions for the Texas Tribune, NPR's Andy Carvin and his Twitter community, Bloomberg Government and West Africa Democracy Radio. Guardian.co.uk/data was one of another four to receive an honourable mention and a prize at a seminar in Washington in September.

Judges said of guardian.co.uk/data:

Guardian newspaper's innovative use of Google Spreadsheets and Google Fusion tables paved the way for sharing data through social media and crowdsourcing, including such high-profile stories as tracking Members' of Parliament expenses and WikiLeaks disclosures

The Knight Battens traditionally reward innovative sites such as ProPublica or Ushahidi.
