'Knifeman' who raided flower shop on County Road at 9am is jailed

This is the 'knifeman' who raided a Liverpool florist just after 9am leaving staff terrified.

Police said Paul Murphy, 50, told his petrified victim he was armed with a knife and ordered she handed over cash.

The robber, of no fixed abode, struck at Blooming Marvellous flower shop on County Road, Walton , on Wednesday, April 10 this year.

In an interview with the ECHO the shop owner said: "A staff member of mine opened up at nine o'clock in the morning and after she entered the shop she turned around and a man had appeared with a knife.

"He told her he wanted the money, otherwise he was going to use the knife. She told him she'd only just opened so there was no cash but he demanded the till be opened and he took the float that was in there."

Police today confirmed Murphy was jailed for four years when he appeared at Liverpool Crown Court on Monday.

A spokesman said: "We were called to following reports that a man had entered the shop, claiming to have a knife, and demanded cash.

"The man then opened the till and made off with money. No knife was seen during the incident and no-one was hurt but the shop assistant was left shaken by their ordeal.

"An investigation was launched and as a result of forensic investigations Paul Murphy, of no fixed abode, was identified as the male responsible."

Detective Inspector Paul Nilsen said: “We take all business robberies extremely seriously – they are not victimless crimes, they often involve people who are just trying to do their job becoming victims of traumatic and sometimes violent incidents."

He added: “We regularly work with partners to provide advice on practices and measures business owners can introduce to make their businesses more secure, and engage in high visibility patrols in areas with high footfall to reassure businesses and shoppers alike.”
