'Knifeman' seen walking down street carrying weapon as police swarm area

A knifeman was arrested after being seen carrying a weapon in the street.

Officers from Merseyside Police swarmed to Prescot Road in Old Swan at around 5.15pm to reports that a man was carrying a knife down the street.

People in the area were left terrified before officers, including two police vans and multiple cars , swarmed the road close to the junction of Swan Street.

A short time later, a man in his 30s was arrested nearby on suspicion of affray and two knives were also seized.

A witness at the scene said that around the same time they saw a drunken row involving a man and a woman.

They also explained that they saw the man being arrested but it is not known if the two incidents are linked.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police told the ECHO : "We can confirm that a man was arrested following an incident in Old Swan this afternoon, Tuesday 1 October.

"At 5.15pm, a man was reported as walking on Prescot Road in possession of a knife.

"Nobody was injured although members of the public were understandably concerned.

"Officers attended a nearby premises and detained a man in his 30s from Kirkby on suspicion of affray.

"Two knives were seized and the man has been taken to a police station for questioning."
