Knifeman jailed after failed robbery

A knifeman has been jailed for two and a half years after a failed robbery bid in Blantyre.

James Whiteley, of Lindsay House, Kittoch Street, East Kilbride, was found guilty of assaulting David Nelson with intent to rob him in Thornhill Grove on March 11 last year.

After trial at Hamilton Sheriff Court, Whiteley (46) was also convicted of illegal possession of a knife.

He had denied both charges, claiming he was with his mother at her home in Blantyre at the time.

The court heard that the mugging happened in the secluded lane on a Sunday afternoon.

A woman walking towards the train station witnessed what was happening and phoned the police. Mr Nelson was able to break free after a struggle and run off.
