Knife-wielding man told partner: 'Wait five minutes, you're dead'

A knife-wielding man threatened to kill his partner after spending the afternoon drinking, a court heard.

Adam Edwards had moments earlier thrust the eight-inch blade into the hand of his partner and taunted her: "Kill me. Go on, f***ing kill me."

The incident came after the 27-year-old had returned to the couple's home in Llanelli from an afternoon drinking on May 15, when coronavirus lockdown restrictions remained in force.

Prosecutor Ashanti-Jade Walton told Swansea Crown Court Edwards returned home intoxicated around 9pm and took out a hot tray from the oven and "jokingly" went to burn this partner with it.

He then came up behind her and put her hand on a knife and held it to his throat and after challenging her to kill him he added: "Wait five f***ing minutes, you are f***ing dead."

Edwards went upstairs and his partner messaged her family and told them to call police. When officers arrived and told him he was under arrest he replied: "Yeah, sound."

The court was told Edwards had three convictions for five offences including a public order offence against a doorman who had ejected him from a premises, possession of a Class B drug, and a caution for assaulting a constable.

Mitigating, James Mckenna described the incident as "ugly" and said it had been captured on footage filmed by the victim but added Edwards had "shown a level of understanding where other defendants before the court can’t".

Mr Mckenna added: “He is not seeking to minimise his behaviour. He is someone who has many battles with binge-drinking and alcohol abuse, but it was an isolated incident – although very ugly."

He said Edwards had been on furlough from his job with Apex Drilling and added: “He does not seek to minimise his behaviour. He is appalled by his actions, which were clearly exacerbated by the Covid-19 pandemic."

Edwards admitted affray. Judge Geraint Walters told the defendant: “This offence, as you readily recognise, was a disgraceful piece of conduct."

He added: “There can be no place for behaviour like this”.

Edwards, now of Harddfan in Bryn, Llanelli, was sentenced to six months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and ordered to pay a surcharge of £128.
