A man and woman are on the run after allegedly threatening workers with a knife, prompting the lockdown of a major shopping centre.

Police were called to the Canberra Outlet Centre about 3.15pm on Thursday, with witnesses describing the man producing a large knife and threatening staff.

"The centre was placed into lockdown and multiple police units attended including (Australian Federal Police) specialist teams," ACT Policing said in a statement.

"A sweep of the premises has been conducted and at this time police believe the pair have fled the scene."

No one reported any physical injuries, and police urge anyone with information to come forward.
