Knife thug jailed for seven years following Hamilton street attack

A knife thug who stabbed a man in the street during an altercation was last week jailed for seven years.

Paul Lindsay, 28, was convicted of assaulting George Bell to the danger of his life at Kelvin Gardens, Hamilton, on June 24, last year.

He was originally accused of attempting to murder Mr Bell, but a jury at the High Court in Glasgow cleared him of this and found him guilty of the reduced charge.

Lindsay admitted causing injury to Mr Bell, but claimed he was acting in self-defence.

The court heard that Lindsay punched Mr Bell on the head before stabbing him.

Jailing Lindsay, judge Lord Clark told him: “The wounds to his chest and neck were potentially life-threatening.

“You have five previous convictions for assault. In one of these you used a baseball bat and in another a sword. A social work report prepared on you says you present a high risk of causing serious harm to others.”

Lord Clark ordered Lindsay to be monitored in the community for two years after his release from prison.

Defence QC John Scullion said: “Mr Lindsay accepts causing the injuries, but continues to maintain that he acted in self-defence.

“The report does suggest that he has extreme regret and remorse about his involvement in this and the injury suffered by the complainer.”
