Knife thug caught armed with blade after death of dad

A grieving son was caught armed with a knife in his hometown shortly after his dad died.

Police caught Kyle Campbell armed with the Stanley knife in Paisley, near Glasgow, in August.

Campbell, 20, admitted the offence when he appeared in the dock at Paisley Sheriff Court on Monday.

He pleaded guilty to having the blade "without reasonable excuse or lawful authority" - in breach of Section 49(1) of the Criminal Law (Consolidation) (Scotland) Act 1995.

Defence solicitor Rhona Lynch said: "He lost his father, suddenly, not long before.

"He has resided with his grandmother all his life, his father had certain addiction difficulties.

"He is actively seeking employment and doing very well."

Sheriff Seith Ireland pointed out new court rules had come in to place to stop the spread of Covid-19 and said: "The Lord President's guidance is that only 'essential business' is to be dealt with - and sentencing is one of them.

"I think we should defer sentence for a longer period, to save him coming into court.

"I don't want anyone coming into court unnecessarily in times of this global pandemic."

The judge called for background reports to be prepared ahead of sentencing and adjourned the case until March.
