Knife offender jailed after avoiding prison sentence two years ago

A knife offender from Hamilton has been jailed for nearly two years after a sheriff previously chose not to send him to prison for his crimes.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that Edward Gormley had failed to take his chance after a community-based sentence was imposed.

Gormley was caught with bladed items in Hamilton on three occasions in 2019.

He had a knife in Donaldson Street on February 1, a screwdriver in Wellhall Road on March 3 and a knife and a Stanley blade in Glenavon Court on August 8.

On the first occasion Gormley was heard saying he was going to stab someone, but he also threatened to harm himself.

Defence agent Jackson Bateman said his client has mental health issues and self-harming is a significant problem.

Gormley was originally given an 18-month supervision order and told to attend addiction counselling.

However, he was back in the dock this week after breaching the order.

His lawyer said that, despite continued difficulties, he is now on a methadone programme in an effort to overcome his drug habit.

Sheriff Thomas Millar told Gormley, now 24: "The community payback order didn't work for you. You'll go to prison for six months from today."
