'Knife kid in playground' claim at Scots school sparks boycott among fuming parents

Angry parents have taken their kids out of a primary school after a child is believed to have brandished a knife in the playground.

Up to 60 mums and dads say they will now boycott Caledonia Primary School in Saltcoats, Ayrshire, until school chiefs can guarantee their children are safe.

The incident was reported to police and relatives arrived at the school in the aftermath to take their children away.

One grandad said: “A pupil took a knife in and caused chaos in the playground.

“The school are playing the whole issue down but how long will it be before a child is seriously hurt?

“More than 60 parents have kept kids away from school as they say they cannot guarantee our childrens’ safety at school.”

Another parent said: “According to eye witnesses, the child got hold of a knife and was running around the playground.

“The children from that playground were moved to another playground and then indoors.”

The school is now in recess until Wednesday.

However, some parents say their children will not attend when school begins again next week.

A North Ayrshire Council education department spokesman said: “An incident took place at Caledonia Primary School and was carefully managed by the headteacher.

“Support is being provided to any pupils or parents who have raised concerns and we would reassure parents we have clear procedures in place for dealing with such incidents. There was no threat or danger to any pupils.”

A police spokeswoman said: “We were made aware of an incident, however no crime has been established. This matter is being dealt with by the school.”
