Knicks on 'short list' for Russell Westbrook trades: report

NEW YORK — The Knicks have the means to absorb Russell Westbrook's enormous contract and are reportedly weighing that options.

Leon Rose's club are on a "short list" of viable trade destinations for Westbrook and, despite limited talent on the roster, can make a deal if they're willing to take on the three years, $133 million remaining on Westbrook's contract, according to the New York Times.

Given Westbrook's cap hit and age (32), it wouldn't be surprising if the Rockets were unable to recoup equal talent. A Knicks deal would be more of a salary dump, and they can also add picks and young players to sweeten the pot.

The Charlotte Hornets have also emerged as a possible trade partner for Westbrook, according to reports. Part of that connection is Westbrook being a Brand Jordan athlete, and Michael Jordan owns the Hornets.

For the Knicks, it'd be a huge gamble on a player who has undergone multiple knee surgeries and demonstrated signs of slowing down. In the short term, they'd be instant contenders for a lower playoff spot. The appeal is injecting energy into the organization after seven straight years out of the postseason. The downside is committing the franchise to a player who couldn't get out of the first round as the No. 1.

Coach Tom Thibodeau has been pushing for win-now moves, according to sources who've been in contact with the Knicks on draft and free agent matters. It's unclear if that means a push for Westbrook.

A day after his trade request to Houston became public, Westbrook was spotted celebrating his 32nd birthday by TMZ on Thursday at a swanky L.A. club.

He was an All-Star last season averaging 27.2 points on 47% shooting, but he was injured during the playoffs and disappointed.
