NEW YORK — Mitchell Robinson broke his silence on his deleted cryptic tweet, claiming it referenced a private issue unrelated to basketball.
“It was like a personal thing,” he said. “So I really — At the same time, I don’t even want to talk about that. It’s just something that’s going on in my life. And I’ll leave that alone.”
Three days earlier, Robinson tweeted, “One day they’ll let me play,” which was widely interpreted as a gripe for a bigger role offensively. He deleted it immediately and didn’t speak to the media after Thursday’s practice, when coach Tom Thibodeau said he had no interest in addressing the tweet with his starting center.
Robinson, who has long teased expanding his one-dimensional offensive game, said Friday that he’s fine with his role. The 22-year-old almost exclusively scores on dunks or lay-ups. He hasn’t attempted a 3-pointer in his three-year career.
The Knicks (8-11) entered Friday’s game against the Cavaliers on a three-game losing streak.
“I kind of like my role. We’re winning games, why change it?” Robinson said. “Know what I mean? Anything that I could do to help win more be great, but I just want to keep it consistent. We’re doing pretty good right now so why change?”
