KLM flight makes emergency landing at Prestwick Airport after mid-air alert over Scotland

A KLM flight has made an emergency landing at Glasgow Prestwick Airport after declaring a mid-air incident over Scotland.

The Airbus A330-300 sent out the distress signal as the plane travelled from Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam to Calgary, Canada, on Friday afternoon.

The plane - flight number KL677 - turned round off the coast of Northern Ireland before landing at the Scots airport at around 1.30pm.

A spokesperson for KLM confirmed the unscheduled landing took place due to a 'technical fault' which has since been resolved.

The statement read: "Flight KL 677, which left Amsterdam for Calgary at the beginning of the afternoon, landed as a precaution at Prestwick International Airport in Glasgow due to a technical defect.

"Passengers and crew were not in danger.

"The problem has now been resolved, but it is not yet clear when the plane can continue its journey to Canada.
