In 2019, six teams will debut with rookie head coaches, including the Arizona Cardinals with Kliff Kingsbury. While none of them have coached a down in the NFL yet under their new title, it is never too early to rank them, right?
Where does Kingsbury rank? Surprisingly high, considering how the Cardinals stand in most other offseason rankings.
According to sister site Touchdown Wire’s Michael C., Kingsbury comes in second behind only Green Bay Packers coach Matt LaFleur and essentially tied with Cleveland Browns head coach Freddie Kitchens.
Yes, Kingsbury lands this high and the only reason he does is because, at their worst, the Arizona Cardinals should have an exciting offense. Kingsbury’s career record at Texas Tech is actually not that great. Who cares? Kingsbury will use every weapon at his disposal and Kyler Murray is either going to crash and burn or put up video game numbers.
Kingsbury’s offenses have always been good. Despite questions about whether or not his offense can thrive in the NFL, the Cardinals should be entertaining. After having a historically bad offense in 2018, they should at least be decent.
Pairing Kingsbury and Murray should be must-watch television as the season progresses. The Cardinals might not win a ton of games but they should be in many more games than last season, when they had the worst point differential in the league.
Kingsbury was a college head coach for six seasons. That experience means something. He might not have ever coached in the NFL at all, but he probably will lead his team to the most improvement than any of the other new coaches in the league.
