Klich collars fourth official, Harrison tests team-mate patience and Leeds United moments missed

Leeds United succumbed to a second 4-1 defeat in the space of five days on Saturday afternoon at Crystal Palace.

Patrick Bamford scored the only goal of the game for the Whites, but should have had two after one was chalked off controversially by VAR.

Here are some of the moments you may have missed from the match.

Lambeth connection

Before the match, Palace assistant manager Ray Lewington made an effort to seek out Luke Ayling during the warm-ups.

They were very warm with one another and exchanged a brief chat before getting on with their jobs.

Their paths have never crossed professionally, but they are both from Lambeth and there was one unconfirmed report on a Palace forum which said Lewington is actually Ayling’s uncle.

Klich’s offside fume

Mateusz Klich was among those to get especially upset about the VAR decision which ruled out Bamford’s opening goal.

In the minutes after the ghost goal, Klich went down with a sore groin issue which needed treatment.

While he waited to re-enter the fray he made sure he collared the fourth official to ask about why Bamford’s goal had been chalked off, even though he was halfway up the touchline away from the dugouts.

The Pole made it clear how unhappy he was with the decision.

VAR fume in the directors’ box

It wasn’t just on the pitch where United employees were angry with the VAR decision against Bamford.

In the main stand too, where each club’s top brass sat together to watch the game, there was conjecture and argument.

Director of football Victor Orta, chief executive Angus Kinnear and head of communications James Mooney were all complaining with their arms aloft about the decision.

Meanwhile, Palace chairman Steve Parish was looking over and trying to explain why the decision was correct. Naturally, they didn’t see eye to eye.

Harrison frustrations

It was not a good afternoon at the office for Jack Harrison down United’s left wing. By the final quarter of the game he was almost trying too hard to make amends.

The Manchester City loanee kept making the wrong calls with his passing and then got caught on the ball too often as he dwelled in possession instead of trying to find a team-mate.

The frustration got a little too much for Ayling and Liam Cooper at a couple of points, which did not hold back with their feedback for the wide man.

Orta loses patience

Orta is no stranger to this column after a United match, but we heard a little more detail from Orta beyond the standard cheers and noise.

The match was gone at 4-1, but Orta’s patience with the officials ran out towards the latter stages.

There was one particular penalty shout not given which annoyed him and he couldn’t help shouting “I hate modern football” repeatedly.

The irony of a 21st century director of football saying that is not lost on us either.

Goalkeepers’ summit

After the match, we spotted Kiko Casilla and Vicente Guaita exchanging notes and catching up by the entrance to the tunnel

There is just three months between the Spanish goalkeepers in age, though they have never been official team-mates in the same squad.
