Klay Thompson refuses to credit Spurs’ defense following dismal shooting night

The Golden State Warriors fell to the Spurs in San Antonio Monday night, 111-105, due in large part to poor offensive performances by Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson — the so-called Splash Brothers.

On a night when Curry and Thompson combined for 13-of-43 shots from the field — and the latter shot 5-of-18 overall, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc — the duo metamorphosed into the Splat Brothers. But Thompson, for one, gives zero credit to the Spurs’ defense for shutting down two of the team’s best shooters.

When asked if San Antonio’s defense did something special to make it tough for the Warriors on offense, Thompson said, “Absolutely not. We just missed shots.”

On one hand, Thompson has a point.

Intangible, shot-thwarting efforts aside, the Spurs and Warriors came up about even on the box score:

Rebounds:

  • Offensive: Warriors — 7; Spurs — 10
  • Defensive: Warriors — 36; Spurs — 36
  • Total: Warriors — 43; Spurs — 46

Blocks:

  • Warriors — 6
  • Spurs — 5

Steals:

  • Warriors — 7
  • Spurs — 7

The Warriors had three more turnovers than the Spurs (13-10). But the Warriors also had 20 personal fouls to the Spurs’ 12. With San Antonio making 86.4 percent of its free throws last night — plus, the Warriors not making shots, as Thompson stated — the Spurs came out on top.
