The Golden State Warriors put together one of the more remarkable runs we’ve seen in the NBA — at least since the Michael Jordan Bulls. They made five straight trips to the NBA Finals and won three championships.
But heading into the 2019-20 season, many expect to see a significant decline in the Warriors’ status among the NBA’s elite. Kevin Durant is gone. Klay Thompson is going to miss time with his ACL injury. Steph Curry is going to be relied on to carry much of the offense alongside D’Angelo Russell.
But according to Thompson, the Warriors dynasty isn’t over. Far from it.
He joined ESPN on Thursday and explained why he thinks the Warriors are suddenly being overlooked.
Thompson said:
“I think that’s a little premature to say that there’s no more dynasty. We still have Stephen Curry, a two-time MVP. Draymond Green, a Defensive Player of the Year. Adding D’Angelo Russell was an incredible gift for us. The kid is gonna blossom into a superstar in this league … To say the dynasty is over I think is a little ignorant because I’m going to come back better and even more athletic. It would not be smart to count the Dubs out. That’s all I tell people.”
The Warriors, of course, did win an NBA title before Durant even signed with Golden State, but in a loaded West, the road will be more difficult this time around.
At the very least, Klay is offering a quote to revisit at the end of the season.
