Klarna customers hit by privacy glitch with millions unable to access online accounts

Buy now, pay later app Klarna has been hit by a privacy glitch, leaving customers unable to access their accounts.

In a statement on Thursday, founder Sebastian Siemiatkowski told followers on twitter the app had suffered an “incident affecting the privacy of some users".

“So sad and frustrating to realize that we have had a self-inflicted incident, for 30 min, affecting the privacy of some of our users,” he wrote.

“Full attention from all colleagues to bring back things to normal, take actions to avoid this going forward and communicate broadly.”

In a statement, the payments provider said it’s experiencing technical difficulties, confirming people are currently unable to log into the app.

A Klarna spokesperson said: "We are currently experiencing system disturbances caused by a technical error.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this is causing. Whilst we are addressing the issue, customers are unable to log into the app."

A message on its website said the same.

It comes after users reported that they were able to access other shoppers' accounts when trying to manage their transactions.

In one tweet to Klarna, a user shared a video showing their log-in details had accessed several other accounts.

The customer said: "Klarna has a major security issue on their hands this morning!!!! Every sign in is a different persons details."

Another user said: "Each time I tried to log in to my Klarna account this morning, I'm on someone else's account?

"Does this also mean someone else might currently be on my account? What the hell is going on?!!"

Shoppers logging into Klarna accounts are met with a message that explains the app is currently down for maintenance and to try again "in a few hours".

The outage means many customers are unable to make due payments – which start from around a fortnight after they purchase an item using the payments method.

Klarna allows customers at online shopping giants such as Asos to purchase items with no upfront costs.

Its controversial model has been picked up by 90million customers worldwide – with users in 17 different countries.
