A 25-year-old man has handed himself into police after five people were murdered in an Austrian ski resort.

The suspect told officers he had killed his ex-girlfriend, her family and her new boyfriend in the town of Kitzbuehel in the early hours of Sunday.

The man, who has not been named, broke up with the 19-year-old woman two months ago, Austria's Kurier newspaper reported.

He allegedly bumped into her and her new boyfriend while out late on Saturday night and they got into an argument.

At around 4am on Sunday, he showed up at the woman’s family home, in the east of Innsbruck, best known for hosting a famous downhill ski race.

After her father opened the door, the suspect's ex-girlfriend came over and spoke to the suspect. He then left.

He went home and retrieved his brother's pistol before returning to the house, police said.

He shot the father as he opened the door, then shot his ex-girlfriend's 25-year-old brother in his bedroom.

He then killed her mother before trying to get into his ex-girlfriend's separate apartment, attached to the family home.

The door was locked, so he went outside and climbed over a balcony into her room.

He then killed the 19-year-old and her 24-year-old boyfriend.
