Kitesurfer who died in tragic accident at Dollymount Strand named locally

The kitesurfer who died in a tragic accident at Dollymount Strand early this morning has been named locally.

Ger Fennelly, 39, got into difficulty near the picturesque north Dublin beach shortly after 9am.

Gardai, the Coast Guard and National Ambulance raced to the scene of the serious incident.

The Howth branch of the Coast Guard said: "The Irish Coast Guard emergency operations centre this morning at 09.14 received a call reporting a kitesurfing incident on Dollymount Beach and requesting assistance for the National Ambulance Service (NAS) and An Garda Síochána who were proceeding to the scene.

"The Howth Coast Guard unit responded quickly and along with NAS and Dublin Fire Brigade paramedics provided first aid care.

"The casualty was transported off the beach by Coast Guard 4x4s to an awaiting NAS ambulance at Dollymount causeway."

Sadly, the brave rescue crews' efforts were not enough and experienced kitesurfer Mr Fennelly was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was taken to the Mater Hospital where a post-mortem will take place.

A Garda statement read: "Gardaí were alerted to an incident at Dollymount Strand, that occurred shortly after 9am this morning, Saturday 31st October 2020.

"A kite surfer in his 30s had got into trouble in the water. He was removed from the water and was pronounced dead.

"His body has been removed to the Mater Hospital where a post-mortem is due to take place at a later date."
