
Participants fly a giant kite off the embankment of the Nakanokuchigawa river in Niigata during the Shirone giant kite battle, which started Thursday and will continue through Monday. During the event, competitors fly 7-meter-by-5-meter kites from both sides of the river, seeking to entangle the opposing side's and pull the kites to their side in a tug-of-war. The event is said to date back to the Edo period.
