Kitchens: ‘Get to know the person’ to build upon the game film

One of the big changes for Browns coach Freddie Kitchens is being more involved in player selection and evaluation in the draft process. It will be a big escalation from his prior duties as a position coach.

Kitchens knows he has to broaden his scope from just what he watches on game film.

“I’m from the old school of thought of, just tell me what’s on tape per se,” Kitchens said. “That’s what coach (Bill) Parcells used to say. Just tell me what kind of football player they are.”

He continued, talking about how his focus here in Indianapolis has to change now that he has more power and responsibility.

“So this week more for me than anything else is, get to know the kid, get to know the person. See what makes him tick, see what makes him mad, see what makes him happy, see what makes him motivated. All the people aspects and the intangibles that you try to get a grasp on, for me,” Kitchens added.

Kitchens and the rest of the Browns staff kick off that part of the process tonight, as player interviews commence following the day’s press conference schedule.
