Kitchens Cookshop in Whiteladies Road is closing after 50 years

A shop which has been trading on Whiteladies Road for more than half a century is closing down.

The first Kitchens Cookshop opened in Bristol in 1968, in Clifton's Waterloo Street. Douglas Bullock set up the store having outgrown his market stall, where he sold utensils and aprons.

Two years later, in 1970, the retailer expanded opening the Whiteladies Road branch.

Since then, its staff have been helping people stock their kitchens with some of the best cooking goods available.

The shop stocks brands such as Robert Welch, Emma Bridgewater, Cuisinart and Joseph Joseph, as well as ranges from ProCook.

But now a closing down sale is underway.

The news comes just months after the shop was revamped, having being bought by Gloucestershire cookware company ProCook.

The acquisition took place in April this year. It saved 330 jobs, including 12 roles in the Bristol branch, where some staff had worked for more than 30 years.

ProCook has confirmed the jobs at the Bristol Kitchens Cookshop store are secure, as the store will undergo a rebrand and reopen as  ProCook stores later in the year.

The Bath store will also retain its staff as it undergoes a similar rebrand.

ProCook owner Daniel O’Neill said: “After almost six months of trying to get the Steamer Trading model to work and a significant amount of investment we have we have been forced draw the brand to a close.

"We have concluded our best route to success is to utilise the most profitable sites in expansion plans for ProCook.

"This will enable ProCook to maintain a high street presence and will save jobs that would otherwise be lost.

"We’ll be moving 13 stores to trade as ProCook but sadly will be closing the remaining 8 stores and head office, resulting in some redundancies.”

CEO Stephen Sanders said: “Given the current economic pressures faced by retailers on the high street we cannot afford to rest on our laurels, and the difficult decision we’ve come to will enable us to protect the rest of our portfolio.

"We are pleased that by transferring 13 stores to the ProCook brand we’ll be able to preserve a significant number of jobs and will be offering full support to those whose roles are affected.”

Speaking at the time of the takeover in April, Daniel O’Neill, owner of ProCook, said the buyout was a "fantastic opportunity" to grow the Kitchens Cookshop and ProCook brands.

He said: “Our focus for Kitchens Cookshop will continue to be on providing excellent value for money, great service and innovative high-quality kitchenware.”

Store manager Rowena Harris, who has worked for Kitchens Cookshop for 30 years, said: “We have many long-standing, experienced staff in the store with extensive specialist knowledge.

"Having an injection of high-quality cookware and kitchenware lines is fantastic news as we can continue our legacy of being the number one destination in Bristol for serious cooks.”
