Kitchen is location for most accidents in the home with biggest danger from knives, data shows

More accidents take place in the home than in the garden with the kitchen worst for mishaps, according to new research.

National Accident Helpline study, which polled 2,000 residents about their accidents at home over the last 12 months, indicated that almost three quarters of the population have injured themselves multiple times.

According to information from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 2.7 million Brits required a hospital visit following an accident in their residence each year.

Not surprisingly, the kitchen is the most likely location for accidents in the home with 60 per cent of people polled experiencing a mishap in the last 12 months, while kitchen knives are the most likely item to cause an incident (49 per cent).

Just 33 per cent of accidents occur in the garden, according to the data.

For those looking to stay in shape during the lockdown, it seems that extra care should be taken when using exercise equipment indoors or in the garden.

The survey shows that one in three have been injured whilst using treadmills, cross trainers, or free weights in their home in the last year alone.

Over 65s had experienced the lowest number of injuries around their homes.

More than half (57 per cent) of those aged over 65 suffered multiple accidents in the home during the last year, whilst 83 per cent of 35-44-year-olds stated they had been injured multiple times.

Tom Fitzgerald, managing director of National Accident Helpline, said: “While it is inevitable that accidents will happen around the house as part of everyday life, it was still surprising to see just how many people are injuring themselves multiple times in their own homes.

“An injury caused by falling off a ladder, slipping on a wet floor or even an accidental strain while exercising can potentially have serious implications and in some cases could impact peoples’ lives for many years to come.

“Now, more than ever, it’s important that the public are being mindful of their surroundings, even in the safety of their own homes, to prevent unnecessary accidents from happening.”
