Kitchen fire warning after Waratah West blaze

FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning never to leave cooking unattended after extinguishing a fire at Acacia Avenue at Waratah West on Thursday.

More than 20 firefighters were summoned to the scene about 11.30am after multiple 000 calls, finding the property ablaze with large flames stemming from its kitchen.

Fire and Rescue NSW said in a statement that crews fought the fire for more than an hour, containing it shortly before 1pm.

Ventilation and salvage operations were ongoing on Thursday afternoon.

No injuries were reported but the property suffered significant fire and smoke damage.

Unattended cooking is the leading cause of house fires in NSW.

"If your cooking catches fire never use water to put out a fat or oil fire, turn off the stove if it is safe to do so and call Triple Zero (000)," a Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said.
