Yokozuna Kisenosato somehow managed to fight his way off the bales and secure his third victory in as many days at the Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament on Tuesday.
In the closely watched final bout of the day, Kisenosato exchanged heavy thrusts and slaps, finally twisting down No. 2 maegashira Yutakayama (0-3) with both feet against the bales at Tokyo's Ryogoku Kokugikan. Ringside judges called for a conference to discuss the ruling, but the decision stood for Kisenosato.
The remaining two yokozuna -- both of whom were absent from the previous Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament in July -- and sekiwake Mitakeumi, who earned his first championship in Nagoya, also notched their third victories.
Yokozuna Hakuho demonstrated his power against much bigger No. 1 maegashira Kaisei (1-2).
The yokozuna controlled matters by grabbing Kaisei's belt a hand at a time before sending his opponent down with an underarm throw.
Yokozuna Kakuryu also easily earned a win, defeating Ikioi (0-3) by forcing down the No. 1 maegashira.
In a bout that ended quickly, ozeki Tochinoshin suffered his first loss, falling to komusubi Takakeisho (1-2). In the second basho as an ozeki, Tochinoshin is wrestling under "kadoban" status, meaning he needs a majority of wins in the 15-day tournament to retain his rank.
Sekiwake Mitakeumi managed to secure his third win in a bout following a meeting by ringside judges on the referee's decision. The sekiwake aggressively pushed Tamawashi (0-3) and used the komusubi's momentum against him to slap him down.
