Kirsty Gallacher and ex Paul Sampson toasted divorce in Champagne bar as they ended 'war'

TV star Kirsty Gallacher's ex-husband Paul Sampson has spoken about their split and says there's more to it than she says.

The Sky Sports presenter blamed her "painful" divorce for her drink driving arrest and subsequent two-year ban.

The 43-year-old split from former rugby star Paul in 2014, and in 2017 she was convicted after being found three times over the limit.

She has since said she was "in a very bad place" at the time as she struggled to deal with the break-up and how it affected her children.

Now Paul has broken his silence on why it all went wrong for the couple.

He spoke to The Sun about the moment she said she wanted a divorce while he was still struggling with depression after the death of his father.

But he revealed they toasted their divorce  from opposite ends of a trendy Champagne bar after bumping into each other soon after it became official.

The ex-England international had been with Kirsty for 15 years and they got hitched in 2010 in Spain.

He said: “It was all a bit surreal, to be honest.

“After about an hour I thought, ‘Well, I’m not going to let her leave without saying something’. So I went over and said, ‘Are you OK?’

“She got quite annoyed but I said, ‘Look, this doesn’t have to be a war.’”

Kirsty had previously claimed he walked out on her - something Paul denied.

“There’s a lot more to what happened than Kirsty alluded to," he added. "We all want to be good partners but sometimes your best isn’t good enough."

Kirsty blamed her divorce for being arrested after she was spotted 'driving erratically'.

Police conducted a roadside breathalyser test which showed her alcohol level was at 106 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.

"It was traumatic," she said to You Magazine. "Divorce is horrible. It floored me like it floors everyone.

"I was just so anxious about the kids – my pain was connected with their pain, and I didn't look after myself."
