Kirstie Allsopp says there's 'no reason' to disinfect homes - sparking debate

If you haven't been living under a rock for the past few months, you'll probably have heard of cleaning Queen, Mrs Hinch.

Mrs Hinch, real name Sophie Hinchcliffe, has become an online sensation after sharing her top cleaning tips and giving people a glimpse inside her sparkling home.

People up and down the UK have become obsessed with her favourite cleaning product - a type of disinfectant called Zoflora.

However there's still one person who doesn't get the hype, and that's television presenter, Kirstie Allsopp.

Mrs Hinch reveals 10 of her best cleaning tips and the products she swears by - including 'Minky' the cloth

Taking to Twitter , Kirstie, who is best known for her work on Channel 4's Location, Location, Location, shared a series of tweets about cleaning and the things we shouldn't be doing in our houses.

Her top aggravation was that people feel the need to disinfect their homes.

She wrote: "Why do people feel the need to 'disinfect' their homes? Our home is not a hospital, it's not harbouring super bugs, it's tidy and clean and well aired, but going round cleaning imaginary 'bad' bugs is just weird, and bad science."

Many people then began messaging her to ask about her stance on Zoflora - to which she responded by asking what it was.

Shocked that she was out of the loop, one fellow user asked her "where on Earth" she had been.

She replied: "I've been in a world where there is no earthly reason to 'disinfect' our home. Where I know that some dirt is really essential, and where I see an increasing number of people with life limiting neurosis about 'germs'."

Many people agreed with the 47-year-old's comments, admitting they too never disinfected their houses.

One person commented: "I grew up being told that germs and a bit of dust were good for you and would help build a healthy immune system. I'm comfortable they were right and have continued with this in my own home."

Another said: "Certainly not in my house, just about manage to hoover once a week."

However there were many people who argued that they needed to disinfect their home.

One mum had a very good reason to buy products such as Zoflora. She explained: "My child has cancer and her treatment means she has no immune system."

A second person argued that their son loves poo too much to leave the house as it is.

Someone else added: "I agree we need to be careful about essential germs. But when you have a very poorly person in your house or a new baby or an animal that needs cleaning up afterwards, Zoflora with lots of hot water is a good product."

After reading through all the replies, Kirstie shared a follow-up tweet, showing that she had not changed her mind about the whole thing.

It read: "I am being introduced to a whole new world today and it is TERRIGYING. I am notoriously clean and tidy, always have been, it has never occured to me to use any of these vile anti-bacterial products. One quick Google search tells anyone what dangerous snake oil is being peddled."
