Kirkstall canal bridge wrecked after car smashes into wall

Police have issued a statement after a car smashed into a Kirkstall canal bridge, causing significant damage.

The crash, affecting the narrow bridge over the Leeds Liverpool Canal in Wyther Lane, Kirkstall, has seen the bridge cordoned off by police and traffic diverted.

West Yorkshire Police said no injuries were reported from the crash on Monday morning but a road closure remains in place at the Wyther Lane and Broad Lane junction.

Officers were called to the scene near Armley Ridge Road and found the car involved in the smash, which had been abandoned.

Pedestrians are allowed to continue to walk across the bridge however traffic is being redirected.

The narrow bridge is usually subject to a give way system.

A spokesperson for the force said: “This appears to be related to a report of a collision we received this morning on Armley Ridge Road, which involved a vehicle that has since been found abandoned.

“No injuries have been reported.

“A road closure is in place at the Wyther Lane/Broad Lane junction and enquiries are continuing.”
