A young Kirkpatrick Durham mum has set up a mini roadside cake stall in aid of the NHS.
And Alexandrea Gonzales’ homemade delights are going a treat with locals.
Alexandrea, 25, started her baking marathon on April 22 – and has raised £250 so far.
Her sales point is a tiny children’s wheelbarrow beside a giant rainbow sign outside her house.
“I have been baking three or four days a week and done 24 bakings in total,” she said.
“People just drive by, see the sign and pick up some cakes for just £1 each.
“At first it was a trial to see if people passing by would buy them.
“But most days since we have been sold out.
“Some people have even been asking for birthday cakes.
“I have made four so far and another one has been ordered.”
Alexandrea added: “We stay a mile outside Kirkpatrick Durham and some people walk out to the house.
“It’s part of their daily exercise – they pick up a cake and then head back home.”
All the proceeds from the sale of Victoria sponges and other treats go to staff at DGRI.
“I pay for ingredients out of my own pocket and family and friends have been helping me with the cost,” said Alexandrea.
“It’s just to say a little thank you in these horrible and sad times.
“They were very good when my mum sadly passed away two years ago.”
She added: “I would like to say a special thanks to my mother-in-law Donna Black who has been helping me so much.
“My husband Lewis has been absolutely tremendous too.”
Meanwhile, Alexandrea has ambitions to become a nurse herself.
“I have put my nursing career on hold to look after my two wee boys,” she said. “I’m still on my degree and when I finish it I’m hoping to join the team at DGRI.”
