Kirknewton was cut off to traffic from Station Road after level crossing barriers broke

Kirknewton was cut off from Station Road after a set of level crossing barriers became stuck in the closed position.

The busy West Lothian road, which allows traffic from the A71 access to the village, was blocked with police urging people to find another route.

Lothian Country said that their X28 service was unable to serve the area as a result, with buses diverted via the A71 in both directions until further notice.

Police Scotland took to social media to add: "Network Rail advise there are issues with the level crossing barriers at Kirknewton Railway Station, Station Road, Kirknewton. Barriers are stuck closed and engineer contacted. Please find alternative route."

The road closure meant that the only route into the village is via the A70 from the south.

The incident was resolved around 1.30pm.
