Kirkgunzeon Summer Gala proves to be a wooftastic day for all the family

Kirkgunzeon Summer Gala turned out to be a wooftastic day for all the family on Saturday.

Hundreds of visitors – many from outside Kirkcudbrightshire – enjoyed the fun–packed programme with canine capers topping the bill.

Pooches of all shapes and sizes lined up for the dog show, dog agility displays and dog scurry while spectators also enjoyed the barbecue, bar, craft stalls, teas and home baking.

Event organiser, Kirkgunzeon Canines owner Emma Maxwell, was delighted the gala had gone so well – and is already looking ahead to 2022.

She said: “The support from everybody was absolutely fantastic.

“At 10am I was getting worried because there was hardly anybody there – but by 11.30 the place was mobbed.

“We had a massive raffle draw at the end and some people said they were from Newton Stewart and Moffat.

“We bought 200 rolls for the barbecue thinking that would be enough but we could have sold 400 easy.

“And there must have been at least 130 cars in the car park.”

Emma added: “We had eight different dog showing classes with the biggest being the rescue dog category where we had 25 entries.

“It was just like a doggie Dumfries Show.
“And what with the dog scurry, dog agility and the dog showing we raised £668.

“Half the money will go to Lost Dogs Dumfries and Galloway and the other half to Greyhound Rescue.”

The day’s only low point came when the duck race had to be postponed because of a lack of water in the Kirkgunzeon Burn.

“We had sold 250 ducks at £2 each with all proceeds to go towards doing up the Maxwell Memorial Hall,” said Emma.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to hold the event in a couple of week’s time.

“I’d like to thank my customers, neighbours and friends, Rory Young for the field – everybody who helped make our day such a success.

“We are already getting set for an even bigger event next year on the same weekend.

“I’m delighted it was so popular and a great day for everyone.”
