One of the main entrances to Kirkgate Market will soon be covered in huge blocks of multicoloured paint to give it the effect of being a 3D geometric tunnel.
The "bold and eye-catching artwork" has been given approval by Leeds City Council, which has appointed an award-winning Yorkshire artist to carry out the work.
Blocks of bright colours will be painted onto the New York Street entrance to the market, which leads into the huge, newly developed street food hall.
Sheffield artist Rob Lee won a competition to give the market an overhaul and will use his specialist techniques to paint directly onto the corrugated steel panels.
Although the structure of the building will remain exactly the same, his clever painting techniques will give it the illusion of a 3D effect.
"The New York Street entrance to the markets... is currently unattractive and not an inviting entrance to the market building," said a statement on the Leeds City Council website.
"It is one of the busiest entrances to the market especially during the Leeds Night Light event.
"Rob is a multi-disciplinary artist working primarily on large scale, site-specific, geometric art.
"Rob’s work uses pattern, repetition and abstraction to explore the concepts of perceived reality and illusion, and the complex relationship between technology and nature.
"The artwork will be painted flat on the surface of the market building and have the illusion of a 3D effect. The artwork will cover the full length of the building from floor to ceiling.
"Rob proposes that the paint will be of highest quality and robust for outdoor conditions."
Rob Lee's previous work includes painting the interior of the Adidas headquarters in Stockport and one of the elephants as part of Sheffield's city-wide Herd of Sheffield art exhibition in 2016.
