Kirkcudbright youngster zipping around town on Land Rover made by his dad

A Kirkcudbright youngster is zipping around town in his new Land Rover.

Five-year-old Harley Milroy can get up to around 5mph in the machine, which even features working headlights.

His new wheels are the result of two years of work by dad Darren Milroy.

The mechanic said: “Over the years, me and my partner have bought toys for the kids that were great for a while but eventually get broken and forgotten about. I hated the disappointment on their faces.

“After seeing kids on Land Rovers on the internet and working on the real thing at work myself it was decided.

“I started by buying a set of build plans for the Toyland 1, which is based around a Series 1 Land Rover.

“I bought all the wood and set about measuring the panels and cutting them out.”

Next it was on to screwing and gluing the panels together, with Darren making the windscreen and bonnet himself.

Other body details, including the motors, wheels and LED lights were ordered from Toylander, while he also got some real Land Rover lights through his work.

It had originally been planned to use an old mobility scooter for the controller but that didn’t pan out, however the two batteries to power the two motors came from a mobility scooter dealer.

And Darren, 36, is now considering making an Ifor Williams trailer for the vehicle.

He added: “It’s taken around two years or more on and off due to family commitments and work but every spare moment was spent in the shed with some very late nights and early mornings.

“Harley now loves going out in his Land Rover at weekends.

“We have been around town and people seem to like it - mum thinks it’s great for putting the shopping in the back.

“It will pop along quite happily at roughly 5mph with Harley and his two sisters Kacie and Sophie, who both love getting driven round in it.

“It was well worth the money and time spent on it.”
