Kirkcudbright to host Barhill Woodland Festival in September 2021

A brand new festival will take place in Kirkcudbright next month.

The town’s development trust and summer festivities have joined forces to put on the Barhill Woodland Festival from September 10 to 12.

A wide range of events have been lined up, including children’s art and storytelling, guided tours on the history and wildlife of the woods, spoon carving classes and more.

And some Vikings will be taking time out from their preparations for the Galloway Hoard arriving in October to demonstrate their heritage skills.

The festival has been put together by volunteers, including Barhill Wood supporter Ros Asbridge and Gavin Philips of Shed Therapy.

It has been created with the Galloway Glens Landscape Partnership Scheme thanks to the National Lottery Heritage Fund with additional support from the council’s community events fund and Forestry and Land Scotland.

The partnership’s community engagement officer Helen Keron said: “The Galloway Glens have been so pleased to support Barhill Woods since 2018 when Rob and his amazing team of volunteers carried out a project to create an outdoor classroom in the Woods, upgrade the red squirrel hide and make the path network more accessible to wheelchair users.

“The woods are now a stunning backdrop to Kirkcudbright town – diverse in wildlife and planting, and accessible for use by all members of the community. Recently we’ve been really excited to work with Rob and the team on this new festival – it’s going to be great.”

Full details of the weekend’s timetable will soon be available on www.kirkcudbright.town and www.gallowayglens.org.

Most activities are free to attend.
