Kirkcudbright teenager's efforts to help fellow diabetics praised in Scottish Parliament

The efforts of a campaigning Kirkcudbright teenager have been hailed at the Scottish Parliament.

MSPs Colin Smyth and Finlay Carson both praised the work of Maisie Anderson during a Holyrood debate on the 2018 Year of Young People.

Maisie was diagnosed with type one diabetes in 2014. Along with mum Soenaid, who runs KBT Pharmacy, she has been campaigning to improve the lives of other people with the condition.

And her work saw her recognised at the first Dumfries and Galloway Youth Awards.

Mr Smyth told the chamber: “At that event Maisie scooped the top award of Young Person of the Year for her tireless, successful, campaign to enable the skin sensor, Freestyle Libre, to be available to those who, like Maisie, live with type one diabetes in Dumfries and Galloway - a campaign she took to the Scottish Parliament’s petitions committee.”

Kirkcudbright teenager Maisie Anderson named Dumfries and Galloway's Young Person of the Year

Mr Carson said: “Maisie is an absolute inspiration and I was delighted to take the opportunity to highlight her tireless efforts in the Scottish Parliament.

“Her campaigning secured a device which has huge benefits for those suffering with type one diabetes and is exactly the sort of story to highlight the success of the Year of Young People.

“She was a well-deserved winner of the Young Person of the Year award and has delivered a lasting legacy for those she was campaigning for.”
