Kirkcudbright set to hold Scotland's only food festival in 2020

Kirkcudbright Food Festival looks set to beat coronavirus.

Organisers have put together a packed programme of demonstrations and entertainment for the weekend of October 24 and 25.

One of the main draws will be a bigger version of the popular monthly farmers and producers markets which will be held in a huge marquee in Harbour Square – ensuring social distancing and other coronavirus guidelines are met.

Andrew McKie of Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities said: “I think Kirkcudbright may be the only food festival in Scotland this year.

“We need something to get us through the winter. Last weekend there would have been the tattoo and the car rally. I was in town on Sunday and it was just dead.

“Hopefully we get some good weather and it will bring some visitors in.”

There will also be a number of children’s workshops and demonstrations at Station House Cookery School, including Mexican dishes from Missie Maxwell, Gillian Warden from In House Chocolates in Castle Douglas and Italian food by Douglas Lisi from Tigh Na Mara.

Hollywood actor Gary Lewis will be there for a Sunday brunch demonstration and the finale will be a Ready Steady Cook competition between the Station House’s Nick Morris and Chris Walker of the Selkirk Arms.

Nick said: “The focus of the demonstrations as always will be on local food and so we’ll have chefs from local restaurants and cafes.

“We’ll have a big focus on hill to fork and field to plate.

“Gledpark are going to be doing a park safari where you can get on the back of quadbike, meet the farmer and find out more about the venison.”

John Watt Coffee from Carlisle, West Coast Sea Products and Drax are all lined up to sponsor the weekend.

Further details of the festival can be found on the Kirkcudbright Food Festival Facebook page.
