Kirkcudbright's visitor information centre opens for first time in 2021

Kirkcudbright’s information centre reopens on Friday.

The site in Harbour Square has been shut for several months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But the facility, which is run by volunteers from Kirkcudbright Development Trust, will welcome people back from Friday.

The trust’s Helen Henderson said: “We are all delighted to be opening the information centre to the public. Its perfect timing as we all start to welcome visitors back to Kirkcudbright and the region.

“We’re looking forward to welcoming everyone, locals and visitors, and to sharing information about the town, its attractions and the wonderful things to see and do here in this region.”

The centre had previously been run by VisitScotland but they closed the site in 2019 with the trust taking it on later in the year.

There are now more than 30 helpers ensuring it can open every day.

It has been improved during lockdown and offers information about accommodation, attractions, shops and services as well as details on dog-friendly cafes, local walks and tickets for events and attractions.

That includes the recently re-published Kirkcudbright Town Walk booklet which provides details of a fascinating walk along with information about the town’s architecture and history while highlighting landmarks and points of interest.

Another route is also available thanks to the new Scotland Starts Here tourism scheme which offers a Kirkcudbright town trail on its new website that can also be downloaded as a mobile phone app.

The 2.5km walk has been prepared by Kirkcudbright History Society and features 12 places of historic interest on a circular route from Moat Brae down both lengths of the High Street to St Mary Street and back to Harbour Square.
