Kirkcudbright's stellar new Dark Space Planetarium opens to the public

A stellar new visitor attraction will open its doors to the public today.

The Dark Space Planetarium in Kirkcudbright is finally opening for visitors having been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The planetarium is the star attraction of Kirkcudbright Development Trust’s £2.6 million redevelopment of the old Johnston School building.

How do you match up to an astronaut? (Jim McEwan)

And its a homecoming for manager Frances Coombey who was a pupil at Johnston Primary before going on to study physiology at Aberdeen University.

The planetarium aims to inform and educate people of all ages as it celebrates the majesty and infinity of space, the wonders of science, the thrill of space exploration and the magic of the Dark Skies Park.

And the planetarium itself uses an HD projector to give people an incredible trip to the edge of the solar system.

Developed in association with Glasgow Science Centre, it is hoped the new attraction will bring tens of thousands of visitors to Kirkcudbright each year.
