Kirkcudbright's Riding of the Marches procession makes popular return

Kirkcudbright’s Riding of the Marches made its popular return on Friday night.

The traditional gathering, last held in 2019, was another victim of the coronavirus pandemic shutdown.

Friday’s procession featured nearly 90 horses and riders and was led by Cornet John Picken and Cornet’s Lass Sam Barrick. Diane Warren was pursuivant and Gemma Scott was courier with the lynors’ roles being taken on by TJ McCarney, Lily Stalker, Lochlann Spence and Mairi Howard.

Joining them – either on foot or on horse – were principals from Dumfries, Annan, Lockerbie, Thornhill and Sanquhar as well as a number of past principals and sashes.

There were also some rein led horse and carts. Saturday night saw the Cornet’s Ball take place in Arden House with principals from other towns once again attending.

This was the last Riding of the Marches for Kirkcudbright Cornets Club chairman Aly Austin in her current role.
