Kirkcudbright's Emergency Services Day proves a success despite the rain

The emergency services proved on Saturday they’ll always respond to a call-out – whatever the weather.

Despite the rain, crews assembled in Kirkcudbright’s Harbour Square for an Emergency Services Day.

There were representatives of Kirkcudbright RNLI, HM Coastguard, Blood Bikes, the fire brigade and the ambulance service.

And there was a good showing from the public keen to support and learn more about the people who help keep them safe.

The day was organised under the umbrella of Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities by lifeboat team members Mike Merry and Keith Armstrong-Clark.

Mike, who brought along his vintage Green Goddess fire engine, said: “The initial feedback from the emergency services is very positive and they would like to do it again next year.

“Hopefully if Covid isn’t an issue we can do more in the way of demonstrations. The lifeboat crew did demonstrations in the harbour and the ambulance service community responders were able to do resuscitation demonstrations.

“The lifeboat and coastguard did get some interest from people about being volunteers which is
great.

“We had a vintage steam fire appliance with artificial horses which Jim Smith brought down from Cumnock.”

Other retro machinery included old tractors and commercial vehicles, with prizes awarded for the best.
