Kirkcudbright's annual kite festival proves to be a fly away success

Kirkcudbright’s annual kite festival was a fly away success.

People packed the town at the weekend to see huge kites take to the skies and also fly kites themselves, with the farmers market in Harbour Square on Sunday also proving extremely popular.

The good weather helped draw out the crowds – the only possible issue being the weather was too good.

Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities chairman, John Blaikie, said: “It went very well.

“The only downside, if you can even call it that, was on Sunday there wasn’t much wind and the guy was only able to get the big kites up
once or twice.

“People were happy to come and sit on the grass and I think they were just happy to be out.

“All the children’s rides were quite busy, all the guidelines were followed and they were for under-12s so there was no need for social distancing.

“The farmers market was also busy.

“There were around 30 stalls and they were all happy with what we had done.”

The coronavirus pandemic has wiped out most of Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities’ events this year.

However, despite last week’s announcement of new restrictions by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, John is hopeful the food festival at the end of October will go ahead.

He explained: “There is nothing at the moment stopping us having the food festival.

“We have a big marquee and we will have a one way system.”
