Kirkcudbright Primary School pupils get involved in Festival of Light

It was a busy day at Kirkcudbright Primary School on Friday as the town held its three-day Festival of Light.

Staff and pupils also welcomed a contingent of Vikings ahead of the Galloway Hoard exhibition opening in Kirkcudbright Galleries the following day.

To prepare for the Festival of Light, classes P5 to P7 made their wicker lanterns before helping the junior classes make their lanterns using different materials.

P7 teacher Ruth Gordon said: “The P1 to P4 children used plastic bottles, coloured cellophane and battery-operated candles.

“The children took their lanterns home and went with their parents on the Festival of Light over the weekend.

“The Vikings did two workshops with one on weapons and sword fights – they were really going at it by the way – and the other on Viking life and different Viking artefacts.

“The children were split into two groups and they really enjoyed both.”
