Kirkcudbright Primary pupils take part in RSPB's Big Garden Birdwatch

P5/6 pupils at the school pushed aside their pencils and papers and averted their gaze from their laptops on last week.

Instead, they sat down in a comfortable spot to take part in the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch.

The nine and 10-year-olds had been finding out about garden birds and how to attract them as part of their cross-curricular topic in the first few weeks of home learning.

As well as taking part in vital citizen science with the RSPB, the Big Garden Birdwatch statistics will be used for learning about data handling in maths.

And the children enjoyed taking part.

Courtney said: “I made my bird feeder with my little sister. We really enjoyed it. It was messy on our hands.”

Leigh said: “The robin was my favourite bird.”

Ashley added: “We saw a red kite. It flew right over our heads.”
