Kirkcudbright people urged to use town's swimming pool as it gets set to reopen

People in Kirkcudbright are being encouraged to use the town’s swimming pool when it reopens on Monday.

The charity-run facility briefly reopened in August following the easing of restrictions but closed less than a week later due to a lack of users.

However, all being well, swimmers will be welcome back again on November 2 with manager Colin Wyper keen to see people back.

He said: “We really need the community to support the pool and the charity shop to keep us going.

“South of Scotland Enterprise have given us £4,500 to go towards the wages this month and there is the possibility of more support in the future.

“My daughter Emma is starting up the swimming lessons again, acquacise will be back on, the swimming club and the canoe club are coming back so it’s a slight return to some sort of normality.

“We are also working on the extension to the gym.

“At the moment we could maybe only have two or three folk in but once the work is finished we’ll be up to about eight or nine.

“It might not be ready for November 2 but it won’t be far away.”

When the pool announced the decision to close last month, Mr Wyper said running costs were around £600 per day but they only managed to take in £225 in the short time they were open.

While Kirkcudbright Swimming Pool is set to return, there’s still no sign of the council-run facility in Castle Douglas reopening.

It hasn’t been in use since the end of coronavirus restrictions as it requires a £500,000 upgrade.
