Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival organisers promise to be back after coronavirus forces cancellation

The ongoing coronavirus emergency has claimed another victim – the Kirkcudbright Jazz Festival.

Event organisers were forced to pull the plug after tough new social distancing measures were introduced.

The June 11-14 extravaganza had been expected to pull in hundreds of people to the town.

For many local restaurants and bars the weekend is traditionally their busiest of the year.

The loss of income is a further blow to a local economy heavily dependent on the tourist trade.

Festival convener Leon McCaig said the committee had been left with no choice as the crackdown on Covid-19 transmission intensifies.

He said: “It is a big hit for the town – but we will be back.

“We are contacting all the people who have bought advertising and all those who have bought tickets.

“We have given them the option of leaving things standing as they are until next year or get your money back.”

Mr McCaig added: “We have spent some money in setting up the festival and advertising in jazz magazines.

“All our publicity materials are printed too – and that money is not recoverable.”

The Jazz Festival Parade at the festival is one of Kirkcudbright’s highlights of the year.

Hundreds of musicians play their way through the town with assorted coloured brollies adding to the spectacle.
