Kirkcudbright hotelier Chris Walker named as Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry

A Kirkcudbright hotelier has been named as a new Deputy Lord Lieutenant of the Stewartry.

Chris Walker has been appointed to the role by Lord Lieutenant Patsy Gilroy.

He has owned and run the Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright with wife Sue since 2006 and the couple live in Gatehouse of Fleet, while daughter Lisa is an auxiliary nurse in Carlisle.

He initially worked for Trust House Forte Hotels before taking on the Creebridge Hotel in Newton Stewart in 1989.

Chris has been a board member of Wigtown District Tourist Association and chairman of the Dumfries and Galloway Hoteliers’ Association. He was a food presenter for BBC Radio 2 and host of Border TV’s Spoon with a View.

In grateful thanks for a heart operation that was “life-changing”, Chris cycled from Kirkcudbright to John O’Groats in 2018 to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation.

Lord Lieutenant, Patsy Gilroy, said: “I’m delighted that Chris has agreed to become one of my Deputy Lieutenants. I know he will bring a wealth of local knowledge and experience to the position as well as a huge amount of enthusiasm.

“I look forward to his input and his innovative ideas for promoting the work of the Lieutenancy in the Stewartry.”
