Kirkcudbright getting ready for Christmas with Santa Claus arriving at the harbour

Christmas will come a little closer in Kirkcudbright on Saturday when Santa arrives at the harbour.

Father Christmas will be taking time out of his busy schedule to land his reindeer on Ross Island before arriving by boat with his elves at the harbour around 12.45pm.

He’ll then be joined by pipers as he makes his way to his grotto at Greyfriars Episcopal Church’s Winter Wonderland Bazaar in the parish church hall.

There will be lots of stalls in the hall offering the perfect chance to buy Christmas presents, with Kirkcudbright Inner Wheel running a cafe providing soup or tea and mince pies to be enjoyed over a chat.

And for the first time there will be amusements and stalls in Soaperie Gardens and a special visit from the Senwick Trekking Alpacas.

The wonderland will be open from 10am until 3pm. Each year 10 per cent of the takings goes to charities and this year’s nominated charities are Dumfries and Galloway Blood Bikes, Parkinson’s UK and Riding for the Disabled.

If you can’t wait until Saturday for some Christmas cheer then Kirkcudbright’s lights will be switched on tomorrow. Entertainment starts at 5.30pm and there will be carol singers, a treasure hunt and the citizen of the year presentation.

Castle Douglas gets in on the act on Saturday with a Christmas market from 11am until 3.30pm.

In Church Street there will be crafts, gifts and food and drink, with Santa, reindeer and children’s entertainment and carol singing in King Street.
