Kirkcudbright folk give their reaction to news that Broughton House and Garden is reopening

Kirkcudbright was handed some good news when the National Trust for Scotland announced that Broughton House and Garden was to reopen.

And, under the care of first gardener Mike Jack, above, the public was welcomed for the first time since lockdown restrictions were eased.

The partial reopening means visitors can once again enjoy artist E A Hornel’s legacy of magnificent artworks, book collections and uniquely-designed garden.

However, three staff posts at Broughton are being lost as the charity grapples with financial difficulties.

What do townsfolk think of the cultural attraction being back on the menu for visitors and locals?

John Collins. (Jim McEwan)

John Collins said: “I think it’s an important visitor attraction for visitors coming into the area especially when the weather is terrible.

“I have been in Broughton House and it is very impressive.

“And at least it will be open for a bit of the season which is a good thing.”

Lily Judge is glad that Broughton is getting back up and running. But because of Covid-19 she is still wary of enclosed spaces. She said: “It’s good that it’s opening again as long as the rules are being followed.

“I’m still nervous about going inside places but I’m sure the National Trust will have it all sorted out so it’s safe.”

Mary Jones. (Drew Geddes)

Mary Jones also welcomed the reopening move. She said: “I have visited Broughton House many times so I think it’s a wonderful thing as long as it’s safe.

“It’s a lovely place and I would imagine they have worked out how to do all the distancing and so on. I welcome their decision.”

Kate Picken. (Drew Geddes)

Kate Picken knows Broughton House well and was over the moon when she learned of the announcement.

She said: “I’m delighted to hear the fantastic news. Huge thanks must go to everyone involved. It must have taken lots of effort from everyone to make this happen.”
