Kirkcudbright charity auction heads online to beat the coronavirus lockdown

A charity auction is going online to beat the coronavirus.

The fundraiser for MND Scotland and Parkinson’s UK was due to form part of a charity supper at Kirkcudbright’s Selkirk Arms Hotel.

However, after coronavirus restrictions saw it cancelled twice, it has been decided to attract online bids for some of the items ahead of the physical fundraiser going ahead in the summer.

The fundraiser was put together by Kirkcudbright’s Marina McGougan, whose husband Alasdair has MND, and Colin Marriot, whose wife Heather also suffers from the disease.

They teamed up with Chris Walker from The Selkirk Arms and Sue McMinn who had been due to run the London Marathon for Parkinson’s UK before raising more than £4,700 for the charity by taking part in a virtual event.

Parkinson’s UK’s regional fundraiser for West Scotland, Jan Mattison, said: “We are delighted that Chris and the team are organising this online auction and hope people will support it. We want to thank everyone involved for all of their hard work.

“There are more than 400 people with Parkinson’s in Dumfries and Galloway and these are difficult times for our community. Thanks to the amazing support of people like Sue and Chris, we’re adapting by boosting our helpline capacity, providing tailored online exercise classes and making sure people who normally receive face-to-face support continue to do so in new ways.”

There are currently five items on offer, including F1 Red Bull memorabilia from Chris Richardson, jewellery from local designer Kathryn King and a signed and framed Scotland rugby shirt donated by the late Adam Gray.

There is also a hand made quilt from Heather herself and afternoon tea for two donated by Glenapp Castle.

Bidding can be made by email until 5pm on November 27. Further items will be put online in December.

The auction can be found online at www.selkirkarmshotel.co.uk/charity-auction.
